Looks like a good idea. I’m sure you could easily fill a much larger tank. It is amazing how much water lands on a roof.
How do you prevent it becoming a mosquito breeding ground? From the picture it looks like the top exposed.

If you got him to install an extensive medium on the roof, you’d cut down potential overflows.

I’m pretty sure you can get the plastic barrels FOR FREE from this Italian food distributer that is located in Cleveland Heights. (I can’t remember the name). Most of them used to have olives in them. There is a netting that covers the top so there is no standing water that is exposed - the larvae should be too small to go through the netting and mosquitoes can’t get through.

We are having the same overflow issue with our barrel! Could you expand on how you “punched out a new hole” and what you used to do so - and for the new overflow pipe? picture too if you can.

With regard to punching the new hole - We traced the width of the new white pipe on the outside of the barrel and then used a drill to drill small holes inside the traced hole. When there were enough holes drilled Todd just basically punched out the circle that was created. The white pipe was from Home Depot - I think it was the same pipe that is used for hot tubs. We bought the pipe and an additional piece that was threaded so that it would make a tight fit. I will take pictures and post them next weekend if you like.
