I need to shake this cold!

June 28, 2008 By: solarsquirrel Category: Uncategorized 2 Comments →

Just wanted to write a quick post justifying my absence in both social and athletic venues…

My body is angry.  Rightly so - I slept an average of 3 hours a night and my eating was just as bad (forgot to eat a few times…) during my trip to Eindhoven.  Now I am being punished with a bad cold that started out with a sore throat, then turned into stuffy nose, and now it’s moved to *gasp* my lungs!  Argh.   Let’s see if I can have a miraculous recovery so that I can join E-Speed and Daisy for a 15 mile trail run tomorrow at SIX IN THE MORNING!!!!

The Netherlands

Notice the top sign on the right - third one down - yea, that’s right, “Openbaar toilet”.  Can you guess what that is?  It’s a freakin’ toilet that is out in the middle of the street!  Nice beginning to my post about my trip to the Netherlands.

:)

The trip was a combination of the worst traveling nightmare I have ever experienced combined with some really awesome people and very productive meetings.  I’ll spare you the details about my travel nightmares, but trust me when I say that it was BAD.  I arrived Friday morning in Amsterdam and left Sunday morning from Eindhoven.  It was really fast.  I think I slept a total of 8 hours Thurs - Sunday.  I couldn’t let being tired get in the way of enjoying my first time in the Netherlands so of course I went out Friday and Saturday night.  The nightlife in Eindhoven is crazy.  It may have been because of the football (soccer) tournaments going on, but it was complete insanity in the streets both nights.  HUNDREDS of people lined the streets singing, cheering, drinking and smoking.  There was so much energy in the air!  Clubs don’t close until LATE and you can just walk around with alcohol.  OH - and did I mention the ‘coffee shops’?  Yea - you can go to the ‘coffee shop’ and order weed off of a menu hanging on the wall.  It’s just such a crazy and different place from the U.S.

Now that I’m back I have a lot of work (and sleep) to catch up on.  I also haven’t worked out since Tuesday - so that’s a whole week without exercise (unless you count lugging my 50 lb. suitcase around the Ulrich train station as exercise).  Tomorrow I’m planning on doing a track workout at lunch and trying to work a little late.  We’ll see how that goes.

Ahhhh, the SPA!

spa

I feel like I need a break so I am only working half a day on Friday and - yep - you guessed it - going to the spa.  It is about a once a year treat that I allow myself to indulge in.  I am going with a few friends and we’re meeting for lunch and then heading to Mario’s spa in Aurora for some pampering.

It’s like a different world there - eveything is based on appearance.  Hair, makeup, nails - those are for the every day people.  These people are all about Botox, chemical peels, bizarre concoctions that get smeared on your body to make you look younger, prettier, and of course, happier.  I’m sure they look at me like I’m a train wreck with my chewed nails, make-up free face, un-dyed hair, farmers tan from biking…  But that doesn’t mean that I don’t get complete enjoyment from laying on a soft warm bed and getting things of different textures smeared on, and then taken off of my face, chest and arms.  Different smells and sounds - it’s seriously an adventure!  The hard part is trying to stay awake towards the end so that you can enjoy it.  It seriously is THAT relaxing.  Of course you have to go back to reality afterwords, but it’s fun to imagine for a little while that you don’t have to work or go to school or worry about anything but getting pampered.  Usually you’ll get to change into a robe and put on little sandals.  Then you can drink a glass of wine while you soak your feet waiting for your pedicure.

I would take pictures, but something tells me that they wouldn’t like a camera!

Weekly training recap 6/2 - 6/9

Last week was stressful. I have been invited to attend an annual meeting in The Netherlands (Amsterdam and Eindhoven) and have been scrambling to get the financial and logistical details worked out. I finally just decided to pay for the trip with my personal credit card and let Philips Corporate reimburse me. It’s a long story - trust me, it wasn’t worth it for me to try to get Philips to pay up front. So anyway, I leave next Wed. afternoon and will be back Sunday night. Very fast trip. I’ll be sure to take TONS of pictures and document the whole thing.

Also stressful is the fact that I’ve been working on the same project at work for what seems like an ETERNITY. Just when I think I have something working I test something else and it’s not. That’s what happened today. Adding to this is my summer class which started last week. I need to stay focused and remember what is important…

Soooooo…trying to remember what I did last week. Ok.

Thurs: 6 mile run at lunch w/ Joe & Marina in N. Chagrin.
Fri: Bike to / from work 40 miles total
Sat: 16 mile trail run
Sun: rest

Weekly Totals:
Run: 30 miles
Bike: 40 miles
Swim: 0 (I KNOW, BRIAN!!)

Like I said before, I’m going to try to bike to work at least one day per week over the summer. It’s SO much easier biking in when I know there will be someone else ‘counting’ on me to do it. Joe said Friday worked for him, so that’s the day I picked. That meant getting up at 5 am. so that I could drink coffee and wake up enough so that I wouldn’t ride head-on into traffic. Left the apartment at 6:05 and met up with Joe in S. Chagrin. The weather was much nicer than a few weeks ago and I wasn’t cold at all. Joe was dressed for a blizzard and was wearing a jacket, fleece, and tights! The ride home was a bit tough for me especially since I was trying to hurry since I had plans. I think I should have eaten more because I got a little shaky and I had to make Joe stop and wait for me to down my rice-cake w/ peanut butter. (I sure know how to pack in the calories!) I need to remember to eat more on the days that I bike. (This week we’re shooting for Thursday).

In other news I started my summer class tonight. It should be interesting - it’s a class on strategy. My prof. has his PhD in Economics and his research specializes in why rich people are rich. (He started off studying why poor people are poor, but he said there wasn’t enough money in it - go figure!!!)

And here’s something funny for people who take Spinning classes - http://dealbreaker.com/2008/05/nyc_broker_on_trial_for.php ;)

“Only” 16 miles

June 01, 2008 By: solarsquirrel Category: running, training 6 Comments →

Todd is doing the summer Buckeye 50k in July and he decided that for his training he needed to run 20 miles yesterday. Keep in mind that he hasn’t ran more than 13.1 for a while - and that was at the Youngstown Half Marathon. I decided that running 20 miles was way too much for him to start off with and talked him down to ‘only’ 16. (Not like I’m a credible source or anything…but I will be running with him and there was no way I was up for 20!!) I decided that the easiest way to get in 16 was to do the pine lane portion of the Buckeye Trail twice. What was I thinking!?!

Of course I was running by myself because I walked up the giant hill at the very beginning and Todd ran it. Then - not even 2 miles into the run I slipped on mud and fell. I was a MESS. Mud all over my light blue shorts and my shirt, and of course all over my legs and arms and I think some splashed on my face. It didn’t hurt, but I was such a mess! I decided that the best thing to do was to try to brush off the big clumps and plan on trying to clean up a bit at the river crossing. I hadn’t seen any people and I was hoping that I could at least rinse off my hands and water bottle before I saw anyone, but wouldn’t you know as soon as I got to the river there was a couple with their dog. I said hi to them and just acted like it was completely normal to be covered in mud as I proceeded to clean off my water bottle (There was mud all over it). When I got to Pine Lane I felt pretty good (only 4 miles in) and chugged the last bit of my water and headed back. I think the main thing to do when training for a trail race (marathon or beyond) is to make sure you are getting the time on your legs and feet. You go so much slower when you are running on trails (my average pace according to Garmin was 11:04. I walked up all of the hills, but still). Under most normal circumstances a 12 mile road run for me right now would be pretty effortless, but I can honestly tell you that when I got to Pine Lane the second time (12 mile mark) I was done for! I was so tired and my legs were hurting! I do have to attribute some of the exhaustion to the fact that I didn’t have enough water and I probably should have used gatorade or something with salt because I was sweating pretty heavily. I drank a bottle of water per each 8-mile loop, but I was out of water by the time I got to Pine Lane - so I probably could have used 4 bottles full. I was SO thirsty by the time I was done so I am using that as an indicator that I was dehydrated. Technically you should not get to the point of feeling thirsty.

When I finally did finish I finished strong and Todd was sitting at the picnic table waiting for me. I gasped out “I need water” and he handed me his water bottle and told me I was running fast. Duh! I wanted water ASAP!! There was an older guy (he told me he was 71 later) talking with Todd and he told me how he runs 2 miles every other day and he also bikes 19 miles round trip to Winking Lizard regularly (a beer at the half way point). He looked great! I sure hope I look that good when I’m older - I swear exercise keeps you YOUNG. I was sort of short with him because I needed to go put my legs up and be able to have a painful expression on my face. I told him it was nice talking with him and to keep up with the running and biking. I then hobbled over to the bathrooms and put my legs up. What a nightmare I must have looked like - muddy, sweaty, hobbling - OH - and I didn’t have a shirt on because I took it off on the last loop (hung it on the Buckeye Trail sign) and when I got back it was gone!! HAHAHHAAHHAA!!! I had mud on my stomach, too, sheesh I wish I would have had my camera to take a picture.

Lessons learned:

First trail run should be less than what you think you can do.
Bring more water / gatorade than you think you need.
Don’t leave your shirt on the trail post.
Always have camera to document hilarious situations.
(most important): Exercise keeps you young!
